White Rabbits.

by aileen on March 1, 2010

A new week and a new month – seems like a good day to start anew.

When we were kids we would always try and remember to say “white rabbits” before anyone else on the first day of the month. I have no idea why. I have just looked it up on Wikipedia (source of all dubious knowledge) and although I still have no real idea why, it seems I’m not alone.

Apparently some people say ‘rabbit rabbit’ or all sorts of things about rabbits and hares. When we were kids we would also say “A pinch and a punch for the 1st of the month, and no returns” – the ‘no returns’ bit was meant to stop them pinching and punching you back. So the reply would be “A punch and a kick for being so quick, and no returns” – Such strange behavior. How did something that seems to have started as a ‘good luck’ wish turn to minor violence?

As I sit here on the first day of a new month, the first day of a new week I wish you all ‘white rabbits’ – the best of luck. If you know me you’ll know that I believe that the best of luck comes from the best of plans. Maybe I should wish you that instead.

You can read the Wikipedia article here but whatever you do today make it positive and plan for success.

Hi Aileen…

I have never heard that before. Maybe it’s because I’m a Florida boy and dont get out much.

You always make me laugh and amaze me. Please keep it up… We love ya..

By the way… Here is a pinch.. a poke… a nudge (no kicks here)… and a white rabbit for you, and I do take returns. I’ll take all the good luck that I can get.

Joe.

I always thought White Rabbit(s) was a reference to Alice in Wonderland (like in the Jefferson Airplane song). Perhaps it just means that each month we get to start fresh? We get to make new choices: which pill to take, whether to follow the rabbit down the hole, tea or no tea? haha. Either way White Rabbits Aileen! I hope you have a great, lucky new start! To what? …you decide.

What an interesting idea… I like that. I just don’t understand one of the choices tea or no tea? That isn’t a choice -you should ALWAYS choose tea (can you tell I’m English)

I think its because people believed white rabbits bring good fortune. Which also might be why they carried around a rabbit’s foot. Wouldn’t get past the fur lobby today ay <– bit of Canadian at the end there in honour of spectacular closing ceremony last night ;)

I think you are right, it’s what the wikipedia article basically says. In our house it was more of a contest to see who could remember and hit each other first…
